but i've heard that about other books and then it was far from true. Lastly, I heard that they were purposely written so that you don't HAVE to read them in publication order. How do they age in the scope of what I'm asking? The first book sets a universe I'd love to sink into for the next few months and binge but I want to get more immersed. Does it get more streamlined so to speak soon? There's 4800 of these books give or take. I know he moved to the US a few years after Killing Floor was released, I can get over nitpicky things. a) Did he get a better editor after the 1st book went big that weeded the british out of it and/or b) how long did it take for the books to feel more "american?" Not that I'm against Brits writing American fiction (hell, I'm Canadian!) but it's more that the terms for things and spelling and slang are so different it's immersion pulling and an editor should have caught this. He's written a few billion reacher books after this. My main questions are: This book came out in 1997. With these Britishisms aside, the story and book overall was exactly was I was hoping for when reading. (one point he used a weird slang for a strange shaped tree I never heard of). There were other British terms peppered throuhgout the book that would make me pause and google what the hell it meant. The most jarring was the use of "kerb" instead of 'curb'. So much so that I had to consciously remind myself that "yes he's a brit, it's his first book, just move on and forget it." However my biggest gripe was how brutally obvious it was that this slice of Americana was written by a Brit. It made me want to go to the gym, listen to blues and hit a one rep max. So I'm a big fan of what I call "popcorn books" and this one soars right to the top of the tier list. Example: Hello.Įxplanation of our link flairs Join our /r/bookclub Don't forget /new!
